Behind the Words

The writer of this website, pen name J.A. Richmond at the Oculus in New York City

Spirited Scribe with a Coffee Fixation

I’ve had a love affair with words for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Michigan’s remote Upper Peninsula, books opened doors to other worlds, experiences, and people that were not like me. Books made my world bigger, and I’ll always be grateful to those brave enough to share their stories instead of keeping them locked away.  I believe in the power of unity and the beauty of diversity. I strive to write stories that honor both. Here’s to sharing writing of the heart. May you always dare, even when your doubt loudly declares you don’t have what it takes. Hold fast and know the world needs your beautiful light among the almost and not quite, for all light has momentum.

Yooper Girl at Heart

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is one of the most breathtaking places I've ever been, and I have traveled the globe extensively. Growing up, believing in magic was easy when the world was made of Great Lakes that looked like oceans and northern lights that painted a cold night sky. The people and places around the Yoop inspire much of my work. As the saying goes, art imitates life.

Professional Life

I've spent most of my career in real estate marketing - a field that, much like writing, begins with understanding people and crafting messages that resonate. I also taught seventh-grade English; I don't think I've ever had more fun with reading and writing. Twelve-year-old humans are wondrous to behold in a "lightbulb" moment. Humans are pretty cool.

Broody Writer ~ Moody Reader

I believe great writers are avid readers – that might be  my way of justifying my out-of-control book-collecting habit and trying to disguise that I am a big nerd. I read around a hundred books a year, mostly fantasy and sci-fi, with a little bit of this and that. You can follow my reading journey on the Fable App.

Hopelite Photography

I’m not the only creative in the family. My brother’s art captures many of the backdrops in my scenes. Every photo on this page is his work.

Nic’s interpretation of the world through his lens proves that magic does exist in our world if only we look, and that makes my heart happy.
